Looking back at your preliminary task (the college magazine task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

The main downside of my initial college magazine was the colour scheme.  None of the colours really matched well, plus the coverlines are quite difficult to see.  I tried to address this problem when doing my final product by deciding on a suitable set of colours before starting any of the production of the magazine.

I learnt your cover image can be used to convey different ideas about your magazine, I didn't put much thought into my college magazine's front cover but on my music magazine I thought about the stereotypes of my target audience (metal music fans) and how they are usually perceived as angry and antisocial, so I chose a cover image to reflect that.

My college magazine was very plain with not a lot going on.  I tried to address that when designing my music magazine.  I used boxes around all my coverlines to make them stand out more.  They also overlap my cover image, this gives the idea that there's a lot going on so to fit it all in some of the content needed to overlap.

When designing my masthead I used the warp transform tool in photoshop to make it look 3D by foreshortening it.  This is one of the techniques I used to try to make the masthead standhead, along with the black and yellow striped background.

When designing the graphic that the free pick would be placed on, I decided to use the yellow colour and glow blending effect, to draw people's eyes towards my cover mount.  One of the main ways I
tried to persuade people to buy my magazine is by adding a covermount on the front, so I wanted it to be spotted on shelves from a distance.

I also learned the importance of conducting audience research before starting production of a magazine.  When deciding on various aspects of my college magazine, it was difficult because I'd not put any effort in to target audience research, so I couldn't appeal to their intrests.  I did produce a questionnaire so I could get an idea of what the people buying my magazine would be like.

I found the importance of knowing the different layout and design conventions when designing my second magazine.  It helps to know where to position different parts of the front cover to emphasise them, or connote busyness.

  1. Good as far as it goes. Did you also learn about the importance of research into the target audience? How did that develop from the prelim task to the main one? And what about the importance of understanding magazine layout and design conventions, through detailed analysis of real existing media products?
